Manhunt

Sometimes you are reminded of more sinister activities taking part in this region. Mas Selamat Kastari, alleged leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah network in Singapore, has escaped from captivity. Authorities are on the look out for him in neighbouring countries of Malaysia and Indonesia. I'll certainly be paying more attention to anyone I see walking with a limp (as he does).

Kampung Baru meal

Rini from Aceh (Indonesia) is a bit of a dish herself !!!

Kampung baru meal - fish (fried), Ayam Bakar (Barbie Chicken) in spicey sauce, Daging Lembu (I think it was pieces of steak in hot spicey sauce), and green beans. + cuppa tea (Teh o kosong panas). All for 7 ringit - just over a quid. It was exceptionally good. Malay food is VERY spicey.

'Slogan War' in Penang

News coverage of the election mainly features the Barisan Nasional (BN) agenda. However, ocassionally stories covering opposition parties do feature. Some sections of the media have covered a 'slogan war' taking place on the mainly Chinese island of Penang between the PKR and the DAP. It seems to be a bit of clever 'word play' using Chinese characters. Sometimes, like pulling down posters of another party, it can all seem a little bit petty (maybe it's only BN that's allowed coverage of any gravitas). Anyway 'Chinese word-play' doesn't feature in UK politics , so this story makes a change:-
Really I only feature this story as an excuse to include
the following two photos!! :-

After my chicken noodle soup.......

I had my mid-night noodle soup here at Restoran Hian Khong
(I think the spelling is a Hakka variant of Hong Kong)
After a late meal of chicken noodle soup at my local kedai I was just leaving for my hotel, when I heard loud cheers........going back to investigate....I found the incubent DAP MP Mr. Fong sitting (in front of man with blue t-sirt) listening to concerns of local constituents at the stall where I bought my soup! Hope he ordered some soup from there - it's very good (the beer cans on the table were there before Mr. Fong arrived).

Web coverage of Malaysian General Election

It's nice to know someone is looking at my Blog. I came across the above page - using photos and text taken from my website - while browsing the internet. As the data from my blog was being used without permission I have asked them to remove it. Their website is definitely of a political nature - and I am only here as a TOURIST - with no active involvement in Malaysian politics.

Lion statues outside Times Square

There are statues of two Chinese lions outside main entrance to Metro Jaya Times Square. Inside the mouth of each is a stone ball which you can actually move around with your hand. I would like to find out the significance of these statues - someone did say they came from Chinese legend. Though I was given little detail, it seems people left out a large stones (instead of food) for the lion so when it tried to eat the stone stuck in its mouth - and this made everyone feel better as the lion couldnt attack them or eat the little children !!

Maybe I will find the proper version of the story sometime....?

BN (Barisan Nasional) Rally at Pudu

Credit card size info on BN candidate handed out at rally
BN candidate speaking at Pudu (only 100 yards from the local DAP campaign headquarters). I think it's the first time I have seen so many Malays in this mainly Chinese community. It is unlikely they were locals (although they may have come from other parts of the constituency).

A police presence was visible

Before this rally I saw only one BN flag in Pudu flying from a window - so you can judge for yourself how much today's rally is a reflection of what people feel in Pudu.

Another DAP meeting Pudu

Snake Alert !!!

When I was in Kampong Baru today a fire-brigade stopped with lights flashing. I quickly discovered it had been called out to attend to a snake in someone's home (someone said it was a 'ular hitam' - ie. a black snake though it didnt seem certain if anyone really knew the colour or size). After a 15 mins search no snake was found. I for one wouldnt sleep well in that house tonight ! Would you ???
