Naming Kuala Lumpur

There seems to be several theories as to how Kuala Lumpur got its name. Kuala means 'junction between two rivers' and Lumpur means 'muddy'. The city is located at the junction between Sungei Gombak and Sungei Klang [Sungei is 'river'] as shown on this photo (Gombak river is on left and Klang on right. Also shown is Masjid Jamek in centre). If correct this photo shows the location where KL derives its name. Kuala also means 'mouth of a river' - the conventional accepted origin of KL is the 'muddy mouth of the river' Klang. The larger geographical area is also known as the Klang Valley. For another theory see:-
